Why should I exercise at my age?

AG Fitness firmly believe that fitness should be Affordable, Accessible and most importantly Fun.

Exercise is key to your independence and a good quality of life as you age. So what do you need to think about to be healthy without hurting yourself?

As a 57 year-old myself I understand the importance of looking after yourself as you enter that next phase of your life, and sometimes making that first step into a gym or exercise class can be a very daunting process.

So why should we exercise at our age?

Let's face it: A 50 or 60 year-old body isn't the same as a 20 year-old one.

You won't be able to do the same things;    nor should you.

You lose muscle mass as you get older, and exercise can help you rebuild it.

Muscles also burn more calories than fat, even at rest, which will offset your slowing metabolism.

Exercise helps stop, delay, and sometimes improve serious illnesses like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, strokes, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, and osteoporosis. It can help your brain stay sharp and active.

Young or old, everyone needs different kinds of exercise.

Cardio or aerobic exercise gets your heart rate up and makes you breathe harder, which builds your endurance and burns calories.

Strength or weight training keeps your muscles ready for action.

Flexibility exercises help you stay limber so you can have a full range of movement and avoid injury.

Balance training also becomes important after age 50, so you can prevent falls and stay active.

Everyone is welcome to join our classes and individual training.

All ages from 18 to 100!

My Story

Starting my career as a chef, to say I had a big appetite was understating how much I could eat.

I also liked a beer or two, which over the years took its toll on me.

So in my 50s I decided to make some changes and this led me to train as a Personal Trainer specialising in Exercise for the Older Adults and as a Dementia Exercise Specialist.

My day job is Head of Health, Well-Being and Dementia for an elderly care charity.
